Many of our competitors require you to leave their logo on your site, and actually have the nerve to charge you extra for the ability to remove it.

In fact, with our default template(s), you will not even find a "powered by" reference to our company, accept with the Lite version.
I don't like the layout of the categories...Can I change it?

Problem:
The information generated by the software is dynamic and based upon what is set in the admin. The layout options for this information are also within the admin. I do not like the available layout options and want to design my own. How do I do this?

Solution:
Below is an example for designing your own category layout for browsing but the same theory applies to all dynamic information generated by the software. The only problem with creating your own category linking is that you will not be able to display the category count of any category within your hardcoded category linked html.

You can restructure the categories using your own layout structure but this must be done solely in html. Meaning, create a template specifically for that page and create the category layout in html. The important thing when replacing any dynamic information with plain html is to make sure the link is set correctly. Each category has its own link and this must be set correctly in your html. For example, in the admin next to each category in parentheses is the id number for that category. So the link to that category would be something like:

Category is Autos and its id number is 4.

For classifieds...The link is then:
http://www.yoursite.com/classifieds.php?a=5&b=4
or
http://www.yoursite.com/index.php?a=5&b=4
Depending on the name of your "root" file.

For auctions...The link is then:
http://www.yoursite.com/auctions.php?a=5&b=4
or
http://www.yoursite.com/index.php?a=5&b=4
Depending on the name of your "root" file.

Where b=4 is specific to the category.

Please keep in mind that if there are changes to the category structure in the admin then the html will have to be altered to match.

Do you offer upgrades for your software from one version to another? What is the cost?

Solution:
Absolutely. We offer upgrades on all of our software versions. Will my site be slow

Problem:

I want to know if the php/mysql combination is fast and how your software is related to site performance.

Solution:

There are several things that affect the speed of a site delivered to the browser and also a few things to know about our software with respect to delivery of this information.

Keep in mind the ultimate goal is to deliver content from one server to a visitor's pc. The information for your site is stored on your host's server and must be sent from there to the user's pc.

With respect to our software the information is dynamic. Meaning the software is setup to expect the information on the site to change because users are placing ads, ads are expiring, etc... This information is stored in the database. The php files run the appropriate functions and retrieve only the information necessary to deliver the content from the database to the end user's pc. These two applications (php/mysql) have been proven to be one of the fastest ways to deliver content(html) to a browser. Also, note that the end result of any software or web applications is to deliver html to the visitor's browser. We have done everything that we know of to allow for optimal performance using php and mysql while still allowing for the administrator to fully administer the site without editing the php functions and offer this to their clients/visitors.

1. Server - server speed can affect the site performance. The server's ability can contribute greatly to this and slow sites are typically due to either a shared hosting account that has too many sites on a single server or the outgoing lines from the hosting company are not large enough to handle the current sites that they host. You may consider talking to your host regarding this.

2. Incoming - this is your connection to the internet. Obviously slower connections will deliver sites slower. The actual speed though is directly related to the size of the page being viewed. In most cases, since the final result of what the user sees is html, images are the reason that the page size too large. Basically, if a page is slow and all else is in good shape than the information on that page is too large and the bulk of it is images. With respect to our software, you could have too many images displaying on a single page, the image size allowed is too large, or you are not setting the image quality to an optimumn in admin > ad configuration > images configuration > quality adjustment for resized images: Typcially we have seen that 20 is a good value but this is really an administrative decision. This also applies to your html in the templates, modules, etc... and the images themselves.

What are the minimum server/software requirements for the software?

Problem:
What are the minimum server/software requirements for the software?

Solution:

Refer to this page of the support wiki for our requirements:

Why is it needed?

Problem:
What do I get with your installation service? Why is it needed?

Solution:

Our installation service is completely optional for you. Some people would rather us install the software on their server for them rather than having to bother with it themselves. They'd rather "hit the ground running". Installation is rather easy if you have ever installed PHP/MySQL software onto a server before. Simply follow the guidelines we send to you with the software and you should have no problems.

One thing to consider is that installing software on a server is a little different than installing software on your PC. More information on our installation services can be found here:

Installation Services

How do you deliver the software after I order?

Problem:
How do you deliver the software after I order?

Solution:
All software is deliverable directly through your 'client area'. The reason for this is that our software is constantly changing as we are adding new features on a continual basis. We want you to always have the latest version of your software and this would not be possible if we were to send you a hard copy on cd.

Most versions of our software are "direct download", meaning as soon as you enter your credit card information (or Paypal information) those merchants send a signal back to us stating an approval of your purchase. We then send an email to you with a special code that will allow you to download our software.
Do you encrypt your source code?

Problem:
Do you encrypt your source code?

Solution:
No, we currently provide the source code without encryption. If you are planning to make modifications to the source code, please contact us for prior approval and instructions on how to receive and implement future updates that we periodically send out.

NOTE: There are a couple of php files that are encrypted. Do you offer hosting? Do you recommend any hosting companies?

Solution:

We do not currently offer hosting. Our core competency is in programming and software development and until we have the resources available to offer a premium hosting service we prefer to simply recommend hosting companies that we have had good experiences with.

Below is a link to resources that we think might be helpful when considering our software. Among these resources is a list of hosting companies that we currently recommend.

How do I do this?

Problem:
I want to put a quick search form on my site as well as use my own search form on the advanced search page. How do I do this.

Solution:

First, this explanation will assume that you have a fair knowledge of creating forms in html and are familiar with the template structure of the software.

Second, to use your own search form on the advanced search page you must turn off the use of the dynamic search form. See admin > SITE SETUP > BROWSING SETTINGS for this switch. The MAINBODY tag will still need to be in the template used for this page as the MAINBODY tag will display the search results. Also, you will need a template created specifically for the advanced search page.

The software comes by default having the index.php file as the root file that all functions are initiated. If you have changed this then you will need to not use index.php as below but the file name that you have changed it to. For example purposes the below form is set using index.php.

Important notes:

1. ?a=19 is the link to the search function (see the form action below)
2. The name of the input must match the name of the field that is to be searched (see the names of each input)
3. The name of the select statement must equal c for using a dropdown category selection.
4. Within the select tag are option tags. These are the categories of the dropdown. The values of the option tags must match the category ids of your category structure. ( Look in the admin for these id numbers are simply hover your mouse over the category on the front page and the category id is the b value). Value = 0 is for an All Category search.
5. The hidden input tags tell what parts of the information of the ads to search.
6. To search a field by range that field must be set to number only. Meaning, when the user enters information into that field during ad/auction placement it will only allow numbers. You can set this in the admin.

**It can be helpful to view the source of the default search form to get an idea of the html needed to generate your search form.

Changing servers - How do I do this?

Problem:
I want to move my software to a new server. How do I do this and what do I need to consider in the admin and html?

Solution:

When moving the software from one server to another there are five things to consider. The actual files (php, images, etc...), the database, admin settings, html and license.

1) Files:
This is the easiest step. With respect to the software, you will simply need to transfer all of the files of the software including subdirectories and the files in the subdirectories from your old server to your new server.

2) The database:
Most hosts provide a program called phpMyAdmin for administering your MySQL databases of your hosting account. You will first want to use phpMyAdmin to create a backup of the database of the old installation in sql format. Note: Be sure to use the Drop Table option as it makes recreating the database a bit easier. Once you have this done, you can use this backup sql document just created to create the "geodesic" installation database tables in the MySQL database created for your installation on your new server. Moving the database over from the old installation to the new installation "moves" all the changes, configurations and settings you made through the old installations admin tool into the new installation. Consult your host's support documentation as they should provide help documents regarding using phpmyadmin.

3) The admin:
Once the files have been transferred and the database has been created, there are a few settings that need to be addressed in the config.php file and admin to correspond with the new server. Below is the list of them:

-The config.php file will need to be edited to match your new database connection settings. This includes the new database server location (usually localhost), database name, database username and password to connect to that new database. Once this is done you can then log into the admin. Check all of the "location" settings within the two admin tool pages below in case the actual url has changed.

SITE SETUP > GENERAL

REGISTRATION SETUP > GENERAL

Check the setting below to make sure the server path to the "user images" directory matches the directory structure of your new server.

-ADMIN > LISTING SETUP > PHOTO UPLOAD SETTINGS > "server path to root of photos directory"

Also double check that the above mentioned directory has the correct rights on it so the script can "write" uploaded files to that directory like your previous installation had.   Â

4) The html:
Within your templates and/or html logged in/out modules, you may have to adjust links and image references. This typically will need to be done if you changed the domain name or if you changed the subdirectory that the software is installed relative to the domain.

5) The license for you installation has almost undoubtedly changed somewhat. You will need to contact geosupport@geodesicsolutions.com with the new installation locations ip address, url and server path to the installation so that the license can be updated to the new location.

All in all it is a pretty simple and straight forward process but if you feel that you do not want to do this, we do offer this as a service. Please contact sales@geodesicsolutions.com if you would like us to perform this for you.

Do you offer phone support?

Problem:

The first thing to find out is which language do you wish to be the "dominant" language for your site. If you wish a language other than english to be the dominant language we would recommend that you create another language within the language/text administration. When you create another language the language that currently has language id 1 will be duplicated. When the software comes to you english will have language id of 1. If you want 3 separate languages for your site create the three languages first. If you want english to be the dominant language of your site leave engish as language id number 1 and translate the other languages. If you wish another language to be the dominant language translate the language that has language id number 1 into the dominant language and leave any secondary language as english...if you still want english used on your site.

We recommend that you always keep an "english" language within the language admin (even if it is not live). This gives you a possible reference in speaking with Geodesic Support as we only speak english.

Your software has a "root" file. In older installations this might be classifieds.php or auctions.php. In newer installations it will be index.php by default. Of course you can change this to anything that you wish by changing the file name and the references to that file name within the SITE SETUP > GENERAL admin tool.

For this article we are going to use index.php as the example root file.

This article also assumes that you were able to create the language in the admin. You can add new language sets within the languages admin tool.

When a new language is added within the language admin tool, the software duplicates all text from language id 1 (the language that came default with your installation) to create the new language. Hint: It is best to set the site up completely with a single language first to minimize the translation with any new languages. Creating the new language also creates "space" within each page to edit the newly created text as well as assign page templates to the new language for each page. What the software does not do is duplicate the template assignments. This is not done because the templates are designed for the English Language and the software assumes that you will create new templates for the new language. So the next step is to create new templates for the new language. Once this is done you will need to assign the new templates to the pages for the new language. So each page will have two templates assigned. One for the initial language and another for the second. Please note that currently language specific html modules. You will need to use a new set of html modules for the second language if you use html modules within your page templates.

To switch between languages on the client side you will need to link into that page. A link is not automatically generated if a second language is created. The form is found as www.yoursite.com/index.php?a=21.

Immediately after creating a second language and browsing pages on the client side you may see a typical error like:

template configuration issue - check template assignment on this page 5

This error is being generated because no template has been assigned for this page for the new language.

Ex: Let's say that you create a second language in the admin. Then go to the form on the front side at index.php?a=21 and switch to the new language. You will likely see the above error because no template has been set for this page for the new language.

The built in language choice page rests at "?a=21" like so:

http://www.mysite.com/index.php?a=21

You will see the language choice form allowing the client to choose the language they wish to see the site in.

You can also create links that will change the language for you instead of pushing the client through the language choice form. Find the id of the language you wish to change to within the language admin tool. The default language that comes with your installation is "1" and cannot be removed from the site. All other languages added after that obtain their own id. For example to change to language id 3 you can use a link like that below.

http://www.mysite.com/index.php?set_language_cookie=3

Change the "3" to the language id of the language you wish to change to and you should be able to use this as a "language" link within your templates (enterprise only) or html to change the language the site is displayed in with one click.

When a user comes to your site the script sets a cookie with the default language. This cookie has a life of one year. The user can change their language at any time through your site language choice screen. This will be saved within the cookie and until their cookie expires they will see the language they chose.

If all else fails and the language cookie can not be set the language that has language_id of 1 will become the language that user will see your site in. Thus the reason we say to make your dominant language the first language in the language list within the language administration.

What types of support do you offer for your products?

Problem:

We will use only the word ad from now on but the same applies to auctions.

OPTIONAL SITE WIDE FIELDS:

These are going to be used if:

- You want them to be used across more than one category.
- You want them to appear in more than just the ad display page. Meaning these can be displayed as browsing columns when browsing the categories.
- You want more flexibility over the layout of these questions within the ad display page. These fields are independent and can be positioned indiviually on the ad display page.
- You want your users to be able to sort the browsing results with these fields.
- You want to require one or more.
- You want to limit the characters allowed for one or more.
- You want them to be numeric only
- You want to restrict the edit capability
- You want them added as a 'cost' field during the listing process for sellers to use.

Because these fields are optional they can be named anything you want and the name that appears for them is independent on each page that they appear. A common example might be if you are running an auto based classified site and want the Make, Model, Year, Mileage, etc... to be displayed in the columns of the browsing results.

If you are going to use one or more across all categories then administer/create them in the admin > ad configuration > fields to use section of the admin. If you are going to vary their use on a category basis then you want to administer them within each category in the admin.

IMPORTANT: These fields will NOT appear in the ad display page if you do not insert the tags associated with them in the ad display template. Meaning the template that contains the html that displays the information associated with the ad's details.

CATEGORY SPECIFIC EXTRA QUESTIONS:

These are going to be used if:

- You want them only to be displayed within the ad display page
- They are going to be restricted to specific categories
- You do not want them to display as columns when browsing
- You are wanting them to be displayed in list format in the ad display page

These fields are created within the category administration. Please be mindful of the template structure of the ad display if you are having trouble displaying them on the ad display page.

NOTE:

The ad display page is the most complicated page with respect to templating in the Enterprise versions of the software. This page can contain the following templates:

Page template
Ad display template
Extra questions template
Extra checkboxes template

The Page template is the overall page template which should contain the tag. This tag, on this page, will grab and display the Ad display template. The Ad display template can contain the tags listed in the admin > Pages > Browsing Listngs > Listing Display Page > [edit] (template). If you have a tag in the listing display template that is not being used the system attempts to automatically remove them from the template at display time so the client doesn't see missing tags within their display. So to sum up the Ad display page can contains two separate templates. These templates must be in the templates section of the admin. Below is where you set each template in the admin.

To set templates for the listing display page go to:

admin > Pages Management > Browsing Listings > Listing Display Page > [edit] (template)

IMPORTANT: Because this template is the most difficult page template administration we HIGHLY recommend that you become more familiar with administering templates by doing so on other page. A great place to start is the home page.

Also, please visit this tutorial for a better explanation:

Tutorial

Thanks so much and hopefully this helps.

How are software updates handled?

Problem:
How are software updates handled?

Solution:

We are constantly working on improving our software and regularly update the version levels of our software once the improvements are complete and at a release state. We also make some updates available upon request prior to any version updates in an attempt to make new features available without the client having to wait for a complete version update.

We also write the update file for the database in such a way that when executed no changes are made to the database unless they are needed. This prevents any problems from occurring related to executing the update file more than once.

All updates are 100% FREE for one year from your purchase date. This means any features that we add to the your product for one full year after your purchase, you will receive for free.

To receive your updates, simply log in to your 'client area' and download the latest available version.

Do I have to be a programmer or know PHP to operate the software?

Problem:
I am not familiar with PHP. Do I have to be a programmer or know PHP to operate the software?

Solution:
No. Not at all. We do however currently offer access to the PHP source code if you are familiar with PHP/MySQL and would like to get into the code.

Changing and finding css controls

Problem:

If you know the css tag you wish to change or the page it is attached to and want to know where to change it....

Solution:

If you know the css tag you wish to change and want to know where to change it....

If you want to change a css control you see within the source of an html page you could do this in two possible places. One place is within the css control of the html source of the site design itself. The page template/html module elements of the site are controlled within an external css document. If you use the default design this document is the geostyle.css file provided at installation within the base directory of your installation. The other possible place to change the css is within the "CSS management" admin of the admin tool.

To check the default design css (found in the "class=xxx" attribute of various html tags within the design) ou must open "geostyle.css" file within a file editing tool (like textpad.com(free) and search the file for the css control. If you find it you can make the changes directly to the file, save the file and upload the file to your site. You may need to "reload" the browser to make sure the browser doesn't use the browser cached version of the geostyle.css document.

As an example we will find the "bodytable" css control found within the source of the front page template. Open the "geostyle.css" file within the text editor of your choice. Using the text search facility search for "bodytable" within the file. You can then change any css aspect of the html element the "bodytable" modifies to what you want it to be. Save the file and upload it over the geostyle.css file you have currently on your site.

FINDING CSS CONTROL WITHIN CSS MANAGEMENT ADMIN TOOL:
To find the css control used within the mainbody dynamic content generated by the script you can use the "CSS management" admin tool or if you know the page the css control appeared on you can navigate directly to that page and click the "font management" link. Two examples of finding the css control below....

To search all css controls go to the ADMIN TOOLS & SETTINGS > VIEW ALL CSS TAGS within the geo admin tool. A complete list of css throughout the whole site is displayed as a list on the page. You can enter your search term in the "Search for CSS tags by name:" and click the search button. If no search results appear check your spelling and try again. If the css tag still does not appear in the search try looking in the "geostyle.css" file mentioned above. If the css control is found it could possibly be used across more than one page...if so all pages the css control appears on will show up as search results for the css control. Next to the css control is the page it appears on. Choose the css control to the page you wish to control by clicking the edit button. Make the changes you want and click save. Refresh the page you were looking at to view the changes you made.

You can also find the css control on the ADMIN TOOLS & SETTINGS > VIEW ALL CSS TAGS page by opening the search facility for the browser itself and search for the term that way. If the browser finds the term you can click the edit button next to the css control. You will next find a list of pages the css control appears on. Click the edit button next to the page you are interested in. Make the changes you want and click save. Refresh the page you were looking at to view the changes you made.

TO MAKE THE CHANGE WITHIN THE PAGE ADMINISTRATION TOOL
Every page within the software has a page to administer most aspect specific concerned with that page. The text, template, modules attached to that page and the css controls for that page can be edited from that admin page.

For example lets say you want to edit the "display_ad_title" css control that appears on the ad detail page. You know it appears on the ad detail display page...so you navigate to that page within the pages administration tool.

PAGES MANAGEMENT > BROWSING LISTINGS > LISTING DISPLAY PAGE > [CSS/FONT MANAGEMENT EDIT]

You will find "display_ad_title" within the list of css controls displayed on the page. Click the edit button next to "display_ad_title". Make the changes you want and click save. Refresh the page you were looking at to view the changes you made.
Also note that each module you place within the design have their own separate css/font controls and are found much the same way as css/font controls are found within PAGES MANAGEMENT section of the admin tool. All you need do is navigate to the module admin page within the PAGE MODULES admin tool and click the same "font management" button to find/edit all css controls attached to the module.

What is the difference between the Featured levels?

Problem:

What is the difference between the Featured levels? Is see that you can charge for different levels of featured status. What is the actual difference between these levels though?

Solution:

There are 5 levels of Featured available. The possibilities are pretty unlimited with what you can do with these levels. The levels do nothing but tag an ad as at that level. The display of these different levels using the page modules associated with these featured levels offer virtually any type of display possibilities based upon the level of the ad. For example, lets say you have the following pricing desires for Featured levels.

1. Standard featured where ads/auctions will appear on normal featured displays
2. Additional featured charge where there ad will appear as featured on the home page.

For the above you could use Featured level 1 and Featured level 2. Set the price for featured for standard featured listings and the price for level 2 as the home page price.

The key to making the above work is by using the appropriate page module for display of these ads/auctions in the locations that you want. Within the browsing configuration of the admin you can set the number of featured ads displayed while browsing. These will be all featured ads at level 1. In addition, there are page modules for use with any of the levels of featured ads. You could possibly use a picture display module for Featured level 2 ads and put it on the home page.

Hope this helps and illustrates a small bit of the capabilities of these levels of Featured status.

How do I move my installation from one directory to another?

Problem:
I want to move my installation from a one directory to another on my site. How do I do this?

Solution:

With all of our products you can move everything the complete installation from one directory on the same domain to another directory. This includes all root files of the software, classes directory, admin directory, images directory, etc...All files within the installation need to move at once with the relative directory structure of the files to one another kept the same.

Once this is done you can simply change these settings in the admin to reflect the new location:

admin > site configuration > general
- site url
- affiliate url
- secure ssl site url (if used)
- file name (if this changed)

admin > registration configuration > general >
- url of register.php file
- secure ssl url to the register.php file (if used)

admin > ad configuration > images configuration >
- directory path to images directory

After the above is complete, the only thing that is left is the html in the templates and page modules of the Enterprise versions. When the software is installed, all html links are relative so they will dynamically be correct when the move is complete. However, if you have gone in the templates are html modules and edited them placing absolute links then these will need to be modified to reflect the new location.

The second possible problem are images currently attached to ads within the database. The "server path" to the image changes as the file is in a different directory. For this reason we only suggest moving the installation when there are no ads/images. This will cause the least amount of problems.

***Once you have completed the move make sure the server directory path is updated within your license****

You will need to contact sales@geodesicsolutions.com with this request.

How can I protect my admin from visitors

Problem:
Although the admin is very well protected by the login and authentication routines used by the software, there are additional actions that you can take to further protect the administration of the software.

Solution:

All admin files and functionality are stored within the "admin" directory. Because of this separation, from the files/functionality of the front side of the software, you can do two things to further "hide" the administration.

1. Password protect the entire admin directory using htaccess. This is a server side feature so talk to your host about protecting directories if you are not familiar with this process.

2. The name of the admin directory has no bearing on the functionality of the administration itself unlike the classes directory for the front side. So, you can rename the admin directory to some other name if you would like. This will prevent other people who are familiar with our software from finding your admin login screen. An example is below:

Your original url to the admin:

http://www.yourwebsite.com/admin/index.php

If you rename the "admin" directory to "myclassadmin" your url to the admin is now:

http://www.yourwebsite.com/myclassadmin/index.php

 Versions 2.0.6b - 2.0.10b:

You will also need to edit a setting in the file config.extra_settings.php. In that file, look for the line:

define('ADMIN_DIR','admin/');

and change it as necessary. For the above example of using "myclassadmin" for the folder name, you would change the line to look like this:

define('ADMIN_DIR','myclassadmin/');Â

Versions 3.0.0 and up:Â

You will also need to edit (or add) a setting in the config.php file. Note that both the file, and the name of the setting, have changed from previous 2.0 beta releases. In config.php look for the line:

define('ADMIN_LOCAL_DIR','admin/');

If you cannot find the line in config.php, you may need to add the line manually. Change 'admin/' to the new folder name, with the "trailing slash" included. Using the example above, using "myclassadmin" as the folder name, the new line in config.php should look like this:

define('ADMIN_LOCAL_DIR','myclassadmin/');Â

When $0.00 dollars selected as price in Enterprise Classifieds!!

Problem:

Many people have items that they don't want the price to be shown, they would rather a person
Inquire about the price. These people are selecting $0.00 in the drop down menu. Is it possible to place the following text options in the same pricing drop down box?

Inquire

Best Offer

Negotiable

Reduced

Serious Offers

Accepting Offers

Trades Welcome

Solution:

In the Enterprise Classifieds, the software is set to display a "-" when 0.00 is selected as the price for the item that the user is listing. Now the price field contains a pre-currency and post currency. You can create a currency specifically for these options. For example let's say you create a currency as follows.

Name - Make Offer
Pre-Currency - leave blank
Post Currency - Make Offer

If a user posts an ad and selects the Make Offer currency and submits 0.00 for the price. The resultant in the ad display would be.

- Make Offer

Is the software compatible with Windows and/or Unix based operating systems?

Problem:

The software is compatible with both Windows and Unix based operating systems. However, the software is meant to be run on an internet server and not a local pc. In addition, some hosting companies that offer Windows based hosting do not offer support for software that is written in PHP.

How do I backup and restore my database?

Problem:
What is the best way to perform a backup of my database?

Solution:
Please reference the Tutorials section of the User Manual (available in our Support Center), as it goes into great detail on how to back up and restore your database.

Do I need to know PHP to administer the software?

Problem:

Do I need to know PHP to administer the software?

Solution:

No. PHP is simply the programming language that we chose to write this software in due to its ability to deliver dynamic (database) content specifically for websites. Another value to you, as the consumer, in using a PHP based program is that it is a free scripting language. This makes your hosting account solution much cheaper than if you were to choose a program running on ColdFusion or ASP.

When using our software, you will never need to open a PHP file, as ALL changes are made through the robust administration pages of the software.
