Sure wish the community would share ideas more. We all win when we do, and it seems we are afraid we are competing instead.
Anyway, my site became live during the holidays. Here is my sharing:
I added Google AdSense the first week of January to my site. It is a simple HTML code that is added, and you can even lock specific sites from showing on your site. While my traffic is growing but not huge by a long shot, I am earning enough revenue already with this method to pay my monthly hosting fee for the site. Google only sends a check once over $100, but that's fine by me.
I found a directory that allows you to get up to 30 regional targeted listings, which of course creates links to your site as well.
Visit www.Infignos.com
I am finding looking at my logs, that free directorys that are targeted to your region and or product line is also producing some early results.
I have a phone book yellow page ad coming out later this month. Has anyone tried this and what were results.
Cuurently exploring affiliate advertisng as well. Based on early Google results, I may consider a strategy change to free ads and get funds by the affilifate ads.....
Hope to hear from more of you!!

it seems we are afraid we are competing instead. I cant think of anyplace on the internet where I meet my competitors more :)...
Competition is not a bad thing though, it's just that some people don't know how to embrace it anymore. I am sure most of us can remember when stores would send customers to their comp, if they did not have an item in stock or where over-extended with service. Greed has set amoung most of the world. I guess one of my professions changed my outlook a bit on competitors.
I hope it works out for you, the Yellow Pages Ad. I increased my advertising budget, for this year year, to mainly conventional advertising. Currently, it is not performing nearly as well as last years marketing efforts, which was mainly internet advertising resources.
I had purchased some research data in 2003, prior to launch or even purchse of GEO Ent, which illustrated that over 55% of the population has internet access, "either at home or work," and 56% percent of those people shop online. I would imagine that the margins have increased greatly since then.
The problem I have accepting this data, is; a lot of people I am familiar and work with have little or no understanding of the Internet. When my parents are seeking something for sale, they ask me to purchase a News Paper on my way to visit. There are so many people at my office who can not use an internet data-entry form, our Broker had to hire an additional receptionist to enter listing details. In contrast, I know of people are seniors are more fluent on the internet then I.
I would not exclude conventional advertising efforts, but I would urge against contributing a majority of your budget in this direction. Keep in mind, I live in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The region of the country in which you reside may produce a different result. In my area of the country, there seems to be a lot of business (Between NYC and Philadelphia), colleges, and new generation people who are fluent with all this new technology (leaves me spinning). I could only imagine that conventional advertising efforts in an agricultural region, or away from city limits, would produce an improved response. For example, I have a friend who lives in an agricultural region of Kentucky. He does not own a computer and does not wish to learn how to use a computer. To capture such an individual as an advertiser, we would be required to offer an off-line advertising process (obviously).
In my opinon, the number of people who are not computer literate are declining at an enormous rate. My niece and nephew are learning computers in elementary school. I mean come-on-now, are computers really elementary? When I consider what is elementary in society, it's numbers and basic math, spelling common words, shapes, sizes, etc... COMPUTERS???
I have found some directories to produce modest results for the small fee of adding a site to their index. I could not say for sure if it has happen, but one advertiser could produce a balanced investment in adding the site. I notice maybe ten or fewer clicks per month from most directories. People often tell me that is not a good number, but I think many directories produce highly targeted traffic, if we offer our site to the proper audience. One directory click is worth one-hundred press-release clicks, in my opinion.
Offering free ads is something I have done. I found that a lot of people advertise when it's free. I get about 10-20 registrants per day for the classifieds. Without free advertising, it produces little results. However, when I offered free advertising I was becoming a target for spammers and people that, "litered," my site. They don't care what they are advertising who how you organised and classified the site. They are ignorant and the vast majority of them could not sell a one hundred dollar bill for a penny. I can assure you that shortly after offering free ads, you will find advertisers from Hyline management, HMS, (India based company) litering your site. Additionally, you will find Type International associates advertising on your site. They place a lot of ads that do not make any sense and are in the wrong categories.
There are companies out there that offer numberous ads for one dollar. These are the people that will post to your free classifieds. I spent a lot of time considering price plans. However, I disagree with anyone that feels free classifieds are the way to go. To become prominent in the advertising community, we need to produce results, not offer discounts. For example, another Realtor once told me that he received eight leads from a two week run in a new Home magazine. I would have been willing to give them five hundred dollars for that ad, but they only charged 9.99.
Publicity will spread when a site becomes a valuable resource. In my opinion, we all need to focus on the weaknesses of Ebay. The average person working a 9-5 job is not looking for a place to advertise. When they have to sell something or want to find something, they turn to Ebay. It's no different then working in Real Estate, a Seller is a buyer as a Buyer is a Seller. If someone purchases something from your site, they will more then likely consider selling something there in the future, provided that the experience was pleasurable.
Another thought to consider, what works for me may not work for you, and vice versa. We are all facing different obsticules and situated differently. In addition, we all have different ideas of a good or successful venture. Some may have more people behind them while others may have more funds behind them. We should use caution in deciding what is right for us. Learn from our trials and adapt to what's new.
I am becoming more concerned with developing an audience, at this point. I too run a Google campaign on my forums. It works fairly well for producing some income. I don't think anyone is achieving their overall goals from Ad Sense, but it produces income for advancement.
From the reasearch I have conducted, offering a marketplace on the internet is surely a wise decision. It can be confusing at times, and frustrating, but the long term results appear promising. I often wish that I would have considered a Poker site, when reading some stock information: http://gamblingmagazine.com/articles/23/23-233.htm (but it's good to have something to strive to accomplish).
Worm your way to the top through trial and error. As I am sure all of us have considered, despite such a wonderful program, there is no way in the world you could just buy a program and become wealthy overnight. What are people seeking and what will entertain them? Get people coming back to the site, then think how to make money from them.
Their are some long thoughts for you :)...
